A few years ago I started looking at the way I approached my putting with a specialist like Karl Morris who came along to watch me play 9 holes and asked questions about how I was approaching certain shots. My process was good for most things but I had one thing that I was a bit embarrassed about after the event. I hit a solid shot in to the 9th green leaving a 30 foot putt, the question I was asked before I hit my putt was what are you trying to do now? My answer was that I was happy to get the ball within 2 feet of the hole. The reply to this was 'why aren't you trying to hole it'. The mind will see 2 feet away from the hole as success and therefore 1 or 2 feet away from success the mind will be happy about which could leave you a tricky 4 footer. Why not think about holing the putt at dead weight if it is a long difficult putt. After all this I changed my thought process wanting to hole the putt and guess what I actually holed it, it is something I will never forget. I always try and hole all putts of which some may be a positive rap towards the hole and some in my mind could be trickling in at deadweight. How do you think about your putting?
